Stop Motion Movies

Here are some of the Stop Motion movies that we made during our task today:
The first one shown here 'Dropping Leaves'
Descriptions of each movie are shown in the boxes below.
The next Stop motion film we created was 'Hug - Feel so close to you'
We used the music 'Feel so close to you - buy Calvin Harris' for this shoot because we thought the music was relevant to the image that we were trying to create and they work really well together.

Making a stop motion film In class.

For this task we were asked to go out and create some stop frame mini movies. I worked in a group with two other people and over all we made about 4 different movies.
* The first one which is my favorite one we have me and someone else walking towards each other - one person was walking down the steps and the other person was walking towards them. The two people knew each other so when they met in the middle they gave each other a hug.
* For the second one we had two people running towards the camera in slow motion - as they became closer the face expressions became larger and showed off more what was happening. But i don't think this one was as good as the first one because running in slow motion was quite hard so it made us look rather strange in the photos.
* For the third one we had to people standing at the bottom of some steps - They were again meant to come across as friends. What happened was there were lots of leaves and in the movie the two people went down to pick up the leaves and when they came back up they threw the leaves up in the air. I liked this movie and thought it worked really well.
* For the forth movie we came up with a simple idea of two people just normally walking/talking along a path and then one of them dropped something (keys) and at that stage they both went down to pick them up and carried on walking afterwards. I think this could have been made better by making the scene a bit more exciting with a bit more happening in it and also if we thought about it more.

Making our own Stop Motion Photography Films

For our task we were asked to create our own stop motion films at home which included people and objects. At first i found it hard to think of what sort of image i could create for my film but then i decided to use a book and my sisters hands. Which i then got her to move her hands very slowly and to do the actions as she would if she was reading a book in real life.
In this photo is one of the beginning shots i took of the book being read. The book started off as being closed and then gradually got opened and the pages began to turn.
In this photo we are midway through the shoot and the pages are being turned.
Over all i thought that this was quite an easy task to complete but as well it took a lot of thought as the movements between shots couldn't be made to big as it wouldn't look right. I also found it hard to keep the camera still and in the correct position as i didn't have a tripod to stand it on.

In this snap shot we have created the image of a boy on a skateboard - here he is on his skateboard and riding down the first part of the ramp that was made our of fabric. I think this creates a good effect on what's happening, but could be improved if maybe the expression on the person told the story of what was happening a little bit more.
I also like the effect this photo has - i believe it creates a great image of when the skateboard is live in the air. i think it creates a image that could represent the fact it is actually happening. But again i think i could be improved by just the face expression of the person doing the shoot.
This is a snap shot again of me with my suitcase - but in this shot we went for a more dramatic move, hinting the fact that the suitcase has been placed right up in front of me showing an over exaggerated emotion. But i think this gave a lot of effect to the shoot.

In this snap shot i am coming to the end of my journey - I have just picked up my suitcase that i dropped and i have now continued to walk. Some of these shots could be improved by bolder movements so it gives off more of an effect of what i am doing and makes is clearer to the audience.
This image is from the third clip we made - at this point i have just dropped the suitcase, the flowing images of the clip are me slowly going down to pick it back up again. Then i continued to walk on while the clouds and sun moved above my head.

Stop Motion Practice

In the lesson today we had our first practice creating a stop motion film ourselves. As a class we created 3 stop motion clips. We used all different types of materials for backgrounds and different objects to create a real effect of what was happening.

For the first clip we tried to create the image that there was a boy swimming in the sea - for this we used blue fabric for the sea and created a sun. This clip could have been made better by more thought for example there could have been other things/objects in the sea with him such as fish and sharks head.

For the second clip we created we went for the image of a skate park - for this we used yellow/grey fabric to create the effect of the skate ramps and we then used a skate board and moved it around the ramp while it gave the image that the boy was doing lots of different tricks. Again this could have been improved by the use of more props.

For the third clip we made we had 'me' walking along what we made to look like a path using fabric, this was also while i was holding a suitcase. we also had clouds moving in the background above my head. This clip could have been made better by - possibly using a  different prop as the suitcase was very hard to move while lying on the floor and also there could have been move props added into this - such as, mobile phone, handbag or umbrella for example.

The equipment we used to shoot these clips was - a camera stand, Cannon 5D camera, Bowen lighting for the set, and a mix of materials/ colours such as blue (for sky), yellow (for the sun), grey (for a path),  and different objects for example skate board, suitcase.
We produced the clips in groups of people so that there was enough people to help out moving the objects such as clouds and to help keep the materials still. We also had one person taking the photographs from above using the camera stand - while one person was holding the ladder.

Over all this gave me a pretty clear image of what we are going to have to produce for our final piece - and it also gave me a few ideas of what i might be able to create. But also the fact that it is quite hard to get the shots in the exact place to make it look like it is a flowing piece. As the person/object can hardly more at all between the shots. I enjoyed the experience of being in the studio and creating a Stop Motion Clip. I think this has really helped me to get a feel of what its like and what sort of thing i will want to produce at the end.

Target Every Colour You Can Dream Of (kids version; 2009)

I like this video clip because its quite simple to understand what's going on but as well its very creative and you would need a lot of experience to make something like this. But i do think that i might be able to create a piece using some of the idea's from this such as the different backgrounds using materials.

Her Morning Elegance / Oren Lavie

I like this video because the use of stop frame is very creative and shown in a large amount of detail - making it a very effective piece to watch. But i do think that this type of clip would take a lot of time, effort and experience to create at such a high standard.
